calm water. There are ripples that allow you to "see" the wind on the water, but there are decidedly no whitecaps. Light-wind requires that you keep the rig piece sailing. This means you hold up the sail, rather than the sail holding you up as happens in moderate- and high-wind sailing.
New sailors should discover in light-wind, so Part 1 covers basic skills. In fact, Part 1 is adjusted about entirely to the beginning windsurfer. However, this makes not mean that intermediate and advanced sailors don't use these techniques in light-wind sailing, nor makes it mean that basic skills aren't used in moderate- or high-wind sailing. In another words, you'll use what you discover in the next two books for the rest of your windsurfing life.
It is much important to recognize once
you are not sailing in light-wind, than it is to recognize once
you are sailing in light-wind. If you're continually being force
over by the force of the sail, not simply by the weight of the rig, then conditions are in the moderate- or high-wind category.
